A federation of open energy modelling projects

Sympolis is a federation of open-source projects for energy system modelling. Sympolis comes from sympoliteia, the ancient Greek arrangement in which independent city-states formed a federal union with shared institutions and joint citizenship. Each member state (polis) was sovereign while its citizens also belonged to the whole.

Sympolis works the same way: member projects keep their own identity while sharing governance principles, a steering and advisory committee, workshops, and communications infrastructure.

The federation is currently being formed. More to follow soon.

Sympolis will be governed by its member projects through a shared steering committee, supported by an advisory committee, with decisions and processes documented in the open. The federation’s governing documents will be maintained in the Sympolis governance repository.
